Bowling Green helmets

The Bowling Green football team has added a new twist to its Military Appreciation helmets for the upcoming season.

During their home opener against North Dakota on Sept. 10, the Falcons will honor the military with orange helmets that feature a BG logo that will be colored like the American Flag, along with a brown stripe. That stripe will feature some of the names of 111 Bowling Green students who have lost their lives while fighting in the military.

Eleven different stripes will be used so all of the fallen students can be remembered. The school came up with the helmets thanks to Vietnam veteran and Bowling Green alum David Ridenour, who helped the school come up with the list of names of the fallen students.

This will not be the first time that the Falcons have honored the military with special helmets. The team used a similar logo during last year’s appreciation day and also did so while playing in the 2012 Military Bowl. And besides that, the school has also honored veterans with special seats at the school’s football field, basketball arena, and hockey arena.

While sometimes uniforms can appear gimmicky, it’s hard not to appreciate this effort by Bowling Green. The school went above and beyond the typical flag logo. We can only hope other schools will continue to push this in a chance to further honor the military.
