Hit By Pitch Hit By Pitch

It was a pretty wild weekend for Matt Masciangelo of the Sacramento State Hornets baseball team. But it had a lot more to do with the ball hitting his body than his bat.

During this weekend’s series against Loyola Marymount, Matt Masciangelo was hit by pitches eight times in nine at-bats, including seven times in one game on Friday.

“Soooooo… This happened… AGAIN. The video skips, but we can confirm he DID get hit. That’s eight in nine plate appearances,” Sac State Baseball said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.

Not only is it absolutely staggering that he’s been hit by pitches so many times in one weekend, but he’s approaching a few records.

“For those counting at home, the school season record is 19: Buddy Morales (’06), Carlos Morales (’00), and Dan Vetter (’95)… Masciangelo needs 6 more to reach the top 10… The NCAA record is 37 shared by 3 players, the last SE Louisiana’s Rhett Rosevear in ’22,” Sac State said in a follow-up post.

It would certainly be an interesting way to get in the record books for Masciangelo. But as long as he’s getting on base and helping his team, it’s safe to say he’ll have no problem with it – aside from the bumps and bruises.
