Max McHugh made history at the 2023 NCAA Swimming Championships on Friday night.

The Minnesota Golden Gophers swimmer achieved a major feat. After outworking the competition in the 100-meter breaststroke event, McHugh earned his fourth individual NCAA Swimming Championship. He also three-peated in the event and became only the seventh collegiate swimmer to ever three-peat in the NCAA Swimming Championships.

According to The Daily Gopher, it doesn’t just stop there. On Saturday night, he has a chance to make even more history potentially.

“McHugh won the 2021 200 meter breaststroke as well and will have a chance to try and avenge his second-place finish in the event in 2022 on Saturday night to try and become the Gophers fourth ever 5-time NCAA Champion,” The Daily Gopher wrote.

Minnesota is home to some prolific swimmers. According to TDG, McHugh is the fourth Gopher to ever win three straight NCAA titles in a single event. He joins Fortune Gordien (Men’s Discus Throw), John Roethlisberger (Men’s All-Around Gymnastics), and Sarah Bacon (Springboard Diving) in that department.

The NCAA Swimming Championships are taking place right at the University of Minnesota in the pool at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatics Center. So as Max McHugh has the chance to earn even more historic milestones, he’ll do so in his “habitat” in front of his closest peers.
