The University of Nebraska revealed a bold plan to shatter its own NCAA volleyball attendance record.

Nebraska Cornhuskers women’s volleyball is one of the university’s most prominent athletic programs. They have historically dominated the circuit, with five national championships. So it’s not surprising that the university wants to showcase them in the biggest venue on campus.

The Huskers revealed plans to host a volleyball match in August at the famed Memorial Stadium. The program made the announcement in a special video promo on their Twitter account.

They officially announced the major event on their athletics website. They revealed that a doubleheader would take place featuring the Huskers, their opponent Nebraska-Omaha, Nebraska-Kearney, and Wayne State College.

The release from the website read:

Volleyball Day in Nebraska is coming to Memorial Stadium this August.

The Nebraska volleyball program will host the University of Nebraska-Omaha on Wednesday, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. in Memorial Stadium as part of a local doubleheader celebrating the impact of volleyball on the state of Nebraska. The University of Nebraska-Kearney will play Wayne State College in an exhibition match at 4:30 p.m. to start the event. Memorial Stadium gates will open at 3:30 p.m.

Following the Nebraska-UNO match, a concert featuring a national recording artist will take place on a stage on the Memorial Stadium field. The musical artist will be announced at a later date. The Huskers’ Teraflex court will be positioned near the north end zone of Tom Osborne Field with the concert stage closer to midfield.

On December 18, 221, they set an NCAA attendance record for a volleyball match. 18,755 attended the match between the Huskers and the Wisconsin Badgers in the NCAA Volleyball final in Columbus, Ohio. So obviously, since they’re holding this event at a venue capable of holding 90,000+, the program hopes to absolutely shatter that previous record.

Given the popularity in Lincoln for the volleyball team, it certainly might be worth keeping an eye on this August. It’s a bold plan, for sure. But considering the factors, Nebraska may well win out here with this absolutely festive celebration of their volleyball squad.
