Ohio State wrestling legend Sammy Sasso was shot in Columbus on Friday night.

Lehigh Valley Live reported that Sasso was the victim of a robbery attempt near the city’s University district.

“Sasso, a two-time NCAA wrestling runner-up for Ohio State, was shot during a robbery attempt in the city where the university is located, as reported by Columbus TV stations, including 10WBNS, without naming the victim,” Lehigh Valley Live wrote.

“The incident happened around 8:30 p.m. in the University district of the city. He was reportedly shot in the stomach.”

The report said Sasso is recovering following a successful surgical procedure on Saturday morning. Lehigh Valley Live also reported that “according to a source close to the Sasso family, Sasso’s surgeon said Saturday morning that Sasso should make a full recovery and wrestle again.”

Sasso is a two-time runner-up in NCAA wrestling. In March, he just finished as the runner-up this year in the NCAA wrestling championships. After he defeated Kyle Parco of Arizona State, Sasso fell to Cornell’s Yianni Diakomihalis, who has won the NCAA wrestling championship four times in his illustrious career.

In 2023, Sasso went 29-3 on the mat for Ohio State. He’s gone 114-13 in his career as a collegiate wrestler in Columbus. Best wishes to him; hopefully, he can recover fully and speedily.
