Following the departure of legendary head coach Bill Belichick from the New England Patriots after 24 seasons with the franchise, many have been debating where he ranks among the greatest coaches of all time. And another all-time great coach offered his opinion on Belichick publicly on Thursday.

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is quickly approaching the elite coaches in the sport himself with three Super Bowl championships as head coach of the Chiefs, and one as an assistant with the Green Bay Packers.

Reid and Belichick’s careers largely overlap in terms of when both got started. So there is an obvious comparison and potentially even an argument growing as to who is the best coach of their shared era.

However, according to Reid, Belichick is “at the top” of their era in terms of the greatest head coaches.

“Yeah so I am a fan of Bill Belichick’s,” said Reid during an appearance on FS1’s Speak. “I’d put him right at the top, for our era. And then I think you have to break it down into eras as you go. Who is gonna say Don Shula isn’t great? Or even the guys before Don Shula. These are people who have really raised the bar during their era and set records. But listen, I’m not in the business of ranking him. I gotta compete against this son of a gun. But Bill Belichick, his record really speaks for itself I think.”

At the moment, it’s hard to argue that Belichick isn’t the top head coach in their era, and perhaps even of any era ever. Winning eight Super Bowls (two as a defensive coordinator) is simply hard to argue with.

However, Reid may be a bit too humble for his own good in this argument, as he could very well end up coming close to Belichick’s career accolades should the Chiefs continue their reign of terror over the NFL for the next few seasons.
