Bill Belichick is one of the greatest coaches in NFL history. Belichick has won six Super Bowl Championships as a head coach and two as an assistant coach with the New York Giants. He’s been a consistent standard of excellence since he took over the New England Patriots in the year 2000. As everyone knows though, all good things come to an end eventually. And it sounds like the Patriots might have a plan or, at least, a potential candidate to replace Belichick when the time is right.

Pats owner Robert Kraft held court and spoke to reporters on Monday. Among the topics was potential coaching candidate Jerod Mayo. Mayo, a former Patriot linebacker, has spent several years on the coaching staff. He’s gotten acclimated and become more polished a coach and that could be by design. Kraft alluded to the potential possibility that one day, Mayo will replace Belichick as head coach of the Patriots.

“Patriots owner Robert Kraft, in an interview with NFL Network, said he views LB coach Jerod Mayo as a potential heir apparent to Bill Belichick,” Judy Battista of NFL.com tweeted. “Kraft believes no ceiling to Mayo’s career.”

Belichick hasn’t indicated, in any direction, if he plans to hang up the headset anytime soon. But, change comes for us all. When the day arrives, remember the name Jerod Mayo.
