Heading into Sunday night’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey had not missed a field goal in his NFL career. His first field goal attempt on Sunday night put that record at serious risk, or so it seemed. Aubrey, though, was up for the task — and then some.

Leading 7-0, the Dallas faced a fourth down from the Philadelphia 42. While that might normally fall into the “too close to punt, too far to kick” no man’s land, going for it was not an option, as it was fourth-and-20. Rather than play the field position game, Mike McCarthy and the Cowboys sent Aubrey, the strong-legged kicker out for a 60-yard attempt.

Aubrey, the rookie kicker, had not yet missed a field goal in his young career, sitting at 26-for-26 coming into the game. While the 60-yard attempt might have put Aubrey’s perfect record in jeopardy, he had little trouble with it. Aubrey’s kick was clearly on line from the moment it left his foot and ended up going over the crossbar with plenty of room to spare.

Aubrey’s kick and his overall track record earned a lot of praise on Sunday.

While Aubrey has yet to miss a field goal, he’s struggled some with extra points. He entered Sunday’s game 36-for-39 on PATs. Fortunately for the Cowboys, all three misses were of little consequence, as they came in blowout wins. And if he continues to make kicks like this, that’s likely a trade that Dallas will happily make.
