The Kansas City Chiefs certainly have a tough task ahead of them when they take on the San Francisco 49ers for the Super Bowl next weekend. One of the main factors they’ll have to deal with is quarterback Brock Purdy.
The way Purdy is quick with his short steps often permeates his reaction time. A skill he’s had for a long time. Since he was five years old playing flag football.
Brock’s dad, Shawn, talked about a young kid who studied the nuances of the game on television when he had his eyes on the wide receivers and running backs. He specifically remembers a referee telling Brock that he had to get rid of the ball quickly.
“And sometimes his friends would come and play, and they would get their doors blown off,” Shawn told The Athletic’s Matt Barrows. “They couldn’t get over how fast it was.”
Then when it was time for Brock to play tackle football the next year, they put him in at quarterback and he found it to be easy.
“Because it was a little slower,” Shawn said. “People were like, ‘Hey, how long have you guys been playing tackle?’ And I’d say, ‘This is our first year. And they were like, ‘What?'”
Even in high school, Brock’s coach, Preston Jones, noticed Brock would analyze any play he was given.
“I don’t know if there was one play called in his three years where there was no thought process, where he just turned around and handed the ball off,” Jones said. “He was our trigger guy on every single snap whether it was run or pass.”
