The Arizona Cardinals still haven’t chosen who will be their starting quarterback until Kyle Murray’s return, but the situation became a little clearer Monday.

The Cardinals released backup quarterback Colt McCoy. The journeyman QB, who joined the Cardinals in 2021, had until recently been the favorite to land the starting role until Murray returns from offseason surgery.

Then on Aug. 24 the Cardinals acquired quarterback Joshua Dobbs from the Cleveland Browns, throwing him into the mix.

Now, with McCoy gone the QB1 battle comes down to either Dobbs or 2023 fifth-round draft pick Clayton Tune.

The 24-year-old Tune, who starred at Houston, is mobile and has a strong arm. Many Cardinals fans have been in his corner during training camp.

The trade rumors that have swirled around Murray in recent months also might impact the situation. If the team were to move him, is Tune possibly a long-term answer at the position? If that’s the case, do you throw him to the wolves right away, or let him sit and learn behind Dobbs?

NFL fans had mixed thoughts on the situation, but many fans uncovered a treasure trove of “tank” memes.
