While it might not seem like it, the Chicago Bears are the winningest team in the NFL. Part of that is because they were in the NFL from the beginning and got a massive head start over most teams but the Bears were one of the most successful teams. Especially in the pre-Super Bowl era.

Heading into the 2022 NFL regular season, the Bears have 783 regular season wins. They have been able to hold the distinction of winningest team since 1920, the first NFL season, when the Decatur Staleys went 10-1-2. But after 102 years, that honor is at risk of being taken away from the Bears, by the Green Bay Packers.

The Packers now have 782 wins, so if the Packers are able to get two more wins over the Bears, they will become the winningest team in NFL history.

If the Bears lose to the San Francisco 49ers and the Packers defeat the Minnesota Vikings in Week 1, the Packers can pass the Bears in Week 2. Sure enough, in Week 2, the Bears face the Packers at Lambeau Field on Sunday Night Football.

If you’re curious to see where your team ranks in that table, take into consideration that if your team didn’t start playing in the 20s or 30s, they’re ranked rather low. Even the New England Patriots, who have been one of the top teams for the last 20+ years, have 41 fewer wins than the Detroit Lions simply because the Lions had a 30 year head start.
