Chip Kelly hasn’t coached in the National Football League since he flamed out with the Philadelphia Eagles. Could the former Oregon head coach and offensive guru land back in the NFL?

The rumor mill suggests that several NFL teams are interested in Kelly. But the interest isn’t for the UCLA Bruins head coach to be a head coach at the NFL level. Instead, teams want Kelly because they want a new offensive coordinator.

CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones reported on the interest in Kelly as an OC.

“A name that’s been on the lips of some NFL head coaching candidates this cycle as a potential offensive coordinator: Chip Kelly. Some teams have done research on him in recent days,” Jones said. Jones posted the news on X, the website formerly known as Twitter.

“A name who once dominated NFL head-coaching cycles a few years ago has been ont he lips of candidates and teams alike in recent weeks,” Jones wrote. “UCLA head coach Chip Kelly has been mentioned as a possible offensive coordinator by multiple head-coaching candidates this cycle, and multiple teams have started due diligence on the former Eagles and 49ers head coach for their potential offensive coordinator vacancy.”

It would be quite the scoop for a team to get Kelly this late in the game. UCLA is making a move to the Big Ten Conference this coming season, and a blow like that would be tough to come back from. But there are only so many NFL coaching jobs.
