The Cleveland Browns could find themselves in need of a new practice squad quarterback in the foreseeable future. Deshaun Watson (shoulder) is designated as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts. With his status a mystery for Week 7, the team could promote veteran P.J. Walker from the practice squad for the second consecutive week.

Any practice squad player can be elevated and automatically revert to the developmental roster following a game. However, teams can only use this method of promotion on the same player up to three times before they have to sign said player to the active roster. That could perhaps be why they turned to a former Nebraska Cornhuskers college star.

According to The Athletic’s Zac Jackson, the Cleveland Browns brought in former Kansas State Wildcats and Nebraska Cornhuskers star quarterback Adrian Martinez for a tryout on Friday as they looked to add some more depth and young talent to their quarterback position.

Martinez was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Detroit Lions following the 2023 NFL Draft. In two preseason games with the Lions, Martinez completed 9-of-18 passes (50 percent) for 76 yards with zero touchdowns against zero interceptions. He was waived during final roster cuts in late August and has remained a free agent ever since.

During his college career, Martinez compiled a 19-25 record as a starter. Last season with Kansas State, he split time at quarterback with Will Howard. The duo helped lead the Wildcats to a 10-4 record and a Big 12 Championship, as Martinez recorded 1,261 passing yards, six passing touchdowns and one interception, in addition to 627 rushing yards on 111 carries with 10 rushing touchdowns.
