Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has not played in the NFL since 2016, claiming that the league blackballed him as a result of his iconic protests during the national anthem. But even though he hasn’t seen the field in almost seven years, he still has fans who have supported him throughout all that time, and he’s thankful.

During an interview with Sports Illustrated this week, Colin Kaepernick made a promise to everyone who has supported him throughout his journey over the past 10 years, promising to keep pushing toward “a better future.”

“I appreciate the love and support,” Kaepernick told Sports Illustrated. “We’re going to keep pushing, keep building, keep fighting, and ultimately, we’re going to create a better future for all of us.”

Kaepernick also made it clear that even though he has not played in nearly seven years, he is not giving up hope that he could one day return to the NFL.

“I’m going to keep pushing,” Kaepernick said. “I’m going to keep fighting for it because I know I can step on the field and play. Every workout, every opportunity I’ve had to show that, the feedback has always been positive. Everything from, ‘He’s still an elite player,’ to ‘The workout was great; it was better than expected.’

“When I had my workout with the Raiders last year, even training with guys, there’s a decent amount of people who may have forgotten what I was capable of doing on the field, so any chance to be able to remind people of what I can do out there, I look forward to and embrace, and I look forward to the day that I get to step on the field and show people what I can do.”

We’ll see if he is ever able to return.
