The Washington Commanders have started their season off on the right foot, beginning the year at 2-0. They received even more good news on Thursday regarding their chances of a new stadium.

The Commanders currently play at FedEx Field, which is located in Landover, Maryland just five miles east of Washington D.C. They have been playing there since 1997, but it seems like they may be on the move sometime in the foreseeable future.

Washington D.C. mayor Muriel Bowser has been an advocate for bringing the Commanders back closer to the D.C. area, specifically at the site of RFK Stadium, a currently defunct multi-purpose stadium in Washington, D.C.

The wheels are now officially in motion to make that happen. According to CourthouseNews.com, the House oversight committee has advanced a bill that extends the lease of RFK Stadium with the federal government to 99 years.

This would allow the Commanders to potentially build a new facility at the site of RFK Stadium. The lease was previously going to expire in 2036.

There is obviously still a long way to go for the Commanders to potentially start building a new stadium at the site of RFK Stadium. But it is a start, and fans are seemingly excited about the possibility.

It also certainly helps the Commanders cause in their chances for a new stadium that they are no longer tied to former owner Dan Snyder, who of course had a number of controversies tied to him before selling the team.
