Jalen Hurts … a Dallas Cowboy?

It could have happened, according to Jerry Jones.

The team’s owner and general manager told reporters on Saturday the front office could have taken the quarterback if he fell to their selection in the 2020 NFL Draft.

“If he had hung around long enough we might’ve done this on the Philadelphia quarterback about two years ago,” Jones said. (h/t Pro Football Talk)

“I just told you, two years ago we were looking at the Philadelphia quarterback, I don’t want to call any names, but we were looking at him, had he fallen to us there we would have drafted him,” he added.

Now, Jones didn’t blatantly say Hurts’ name, but … c’mon. The Cowboys had their shot at Hurts, who went No. 53 overall in the second round, but instead chose cornerback Trevon Diggs two picks earlier.

This isn’t the first time we’re hearing of Jones’ impressions of Hurts.

Last year, he stopped by his weekly radio spot in Dallas and sang Hurts’ praises, particularly about his passing game.

“(He) has really evolved and has been better than when he came out than you might’ve thought. I was particularly impressed with his passing.”

Hurts had a strong 2022 campaign earning a Pro Bowl selection and the prestigious Bert Bell Award. He accumulated 3,701 passing yards, 22 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also led the Eagles to the Super Bowl.

But Jones has other quarterback-related things to worry about at the moment.

The team acquired Trey Lance from the San Francisco 49ers on Friday night in exchange for a fourth-round pick. He’ll serve under Dak Prescott in hopes of developing him.

“Well, he gives us an opportunity to — at a level that we probably had gone in the draft — to work and develop a young quarterback,” Jones said in a statement to the via Cowboys’ official website. “And you need to be doing that.”

He also added he believes this doesn’t take away anything from Prescott’s future, but helps the position overall.

“We hit this and figuratively didn’t even get them off the phone because we wanted him in here,” he said. “Not in any way to be confused that we’re not betting on our success on Dak. We just need to, the Dallas Cowboys, where we can, be developing the best that we can develop for the future for quarterbacks.”
