Last season was a difficult year for former All-Pro running back David Johnson. The veteran running back finished the year with only 228 yards after losing his starting role with the Houston Texans after only four weeks.

Johnson is now a free agent, and his NFL career certainly appears to be up in the air at this point.

Reports emerged earlier this week that he was having a workout with the New Orleans Saints, which occurred on Tuesday.

While there was some optimism surrounding the workout and a potential role with the Saints moving forward, it appears that both sides have agreed to go their separate ways.

Johnson discussed the workout and the negotiations with the Saints on social media on Friday.

“Unfortunate, we couldn’t come to terms, but appreciate the Saints for the opportunity! Journey to be continued…”

The Saints currently have five running backs on their roster, including five-time Pro Bowl running back Alvin Kamara and longtime NFL veteran Mark Ingram.

Johnson likely wouldn’t have had much of a role with the Saints even if he signed with the team, but it doesn’t look like his journey in the NFL will include New Orleans going forward.

Running back is a position where there are a ton of injuries, so Johnson should get another call at some point this offseason from a running back needy team.
