Deion Sanders Colorado head coach Deion Sanders walks the field during warm ups as the Oregon Ducks host Colorado in the Pac-12 opener Saturday, Sept. 23, 2023, at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Ore.

For the last two weeks, there have been rumors that Colorado Buffalos head coach Deion Sanders has said that there are only six NFL teams he’d allow his sons and defensive back Travis Hunter to play for.

Those teams would be the Dallas Cowboys, Atlanta Falcons, San Francisco 49ers, Washington Commanders, Philadelphia Eagles, and Baltimore Ravens.

Now, Sanders is fighting back these allegations in a new interview. He now says he didn’t say any of these things and would be stupid if he did.

“Who said that and did you see me say that? … The thing about a lie, a lie is so fast. It can outrun the truth any day. That’s a bald-faced lie. That’s a stupid lie. I have more than six owners that are friends. I have more than six GMs that are friends,” Sanders said. “You gotta understand I played 14 [seasons] and I worked another 17, I believe, in the NFL, NFL Network, and CBS. I know a lot of people. Come on. So I would never do that. Before I would disclose — if I was that stupid, I wouldn’t disclose the teams I would want them to play for, I would disclose the several that I wouldn’t.”

Sanders did indeed make it clear not too long ago that he wanted his sons to only play for certain teams that he played for and if not, they’d make this into an Eli Manning situation.

“One of them is going to be one, and the latter one would not go behind four. Now, all this is subjective, because I know where I want — kinda want them to go. And let’s not forget Shilo, but I know where I want them to go. So with certain cities, ain’t gonna happen. It’s gonna be Eli. We ain’t doing it,” Sanders said in March.

Manning refused to play for the San Diego Chargers and demanded they trade the first pick that year. While the team did draft him, they ended up trading him to the New York Giants where he won two Super Bowls against Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.

Sanders made it clear that the same would happen in this situation, especially if cold-weather teams picked his players.

One city in particular that Sanders would love to see his sons play in is Atlanta. Sanders started his NFL career with the Falcons and one of the reasons he wants his sons to go there is because of the city’s diversity.

“It was certain cities that fit. Atlanta fit. And that’s what I want for my kids. All of them. I want the right fit,” he said.”First of all, there’s the ethnicity, because that’s the first time I ever saw Black people in positions of authority. I had never seen African Americans as doctors and lawyers until I went on an All-American visit there. Blew my mind.”

Sanders may be trying to back away from his earlier comments, but it’s clear that he has a plan, now, whether he executes it or not remains to be seen.
