Ahead of the Detroit Lions matchup with the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game next weekend, the team is making a pretty significant move to bolster their roster by signing a veteran star with a lot of experience playing at the highest level.

On Monday morning, NFL insider Tom Pelissero reported that the Detroit Lions were signing veteran tight end Zach Ertz to their roster ahead of this weekend’s showdown with the Niners.

“Three-time Pro Bowl TE Zach Ertz is signing with the #Lions, per sources. Ertz will start out on the practice squad, with plans to potentially elevate him for the NFC Championship Game. A boost for the final stretch,” Pelissero said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.

Ertz spent the bulk of the season with the Arizona Cardinals but asked to be released from the team to join a potential championship contender. It appears the Lions were his pick.

Obviously, this is significant news for both Ertz and the Lions, and the NFL world had a lot to say about it on social media as a result.

Ertz is a three-time Pro Bowler and a Super Bowl champion. We’ll have to see if he can add to that legacy this week.
