The Miami Dolphins were able to hold on to beat the Buffalo Bills on Sunday despite a disastrous play that is now commonly being referred to as the “butt punt”.

This infamous play occurred late in the fourth quarter while the Dolphins were clinging to a four-point lead. Dolphins punter Thomas Morstead was pinned in the end zone while punting the ball back to the Bills, where he accidentally punted the ball into the backside of his blocker, Trent Sherfield.

The ball then went out of the back of the end zone, resulting in a safety in a very strange turn of events for Miami.

This play rivals the “butt fumble” from former New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez as potentially the most embarrassing score allowed of any team in recent memory.

Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill was asked about the hilarious play following the game, and gave an equally comedic reaction to the weird play.

“I’ve never seen a butt punt before,” said Hill. “But Trent (Sherfield) is very smart. For him to come to the sideline and take ownership says what kind of a player he is. He’s going to come to the film room and correct it. Next time he’s gonna catch it with his butt cheeks. Because he’s got strong butt cheeks.”

It’s great that Tyreek Hill brought a hilarious response to the table after this play considering just how strange the play was.

Part of that is because the Miami defense went on to stop the Bills when they got the ball. It certainly would be far less of a laughing matter for the Dolphins if they had gone on to lose the game.
