This week, the Washington Commanders made the decision to bench second-year quarterback Sam Howell in favor of veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett. And it sounds like the reason for the change was rather simple: Howell wasn’t performing well enough.

During a press conference this week, Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy made it clear that he simply needed his quarterback to be better, and he wasn’t.

“He just didn’t play well, and unfortunately that happens. And it’s not like anything you can put your finger on. But on the flip side of that, Jacoby steps in and he sparks a rally. The good thing is that you have a great quarterback room and those guys do a great job of supporting one another, and those guys are the biggest fans of each other. And obviously it’s a tough situation, but I guarantee you Sam is going to be Jacoby’s biggest fan just as Jacoby was his biggest fan,” Bieniemy said according to Pro Football Talk.

Now, the team will turn to Brissett, who came in for Howell in each of the last two games when the young quarterback was benched.

We’ll have to see if inserting Brissett into the offense provides any sort of spark that was lacking with Howell leading the way.
