DeMarco Murray

DeMarco Murray went viral on Twitter Thursday, for the strangest reason.

The former Dallas Cowboys star has been out of the NFL since 2017, so many fans who saw him trending on Twitter probably clicked into Twitter threads on Murray with a sense of dread. Had something bad happened to him?

No, not at all. What happened is Ezekiel Elliott made headlines. Confused? Here’s how it went down.

Earlier Thursday, an ESPN report noted that Elliott is targeting three possible teams to join: the New York Jets, Cincinnati Bengals and Philadelphia Eagles. Elliott was released by the Cowboys in mid-March.

Many Cowboys fans were infuriated by the mere thought that Elliott might go to the hated division rival Eagles. In fact, hundreds of Cowboys fans had the same thought: That’s exactly what happened with Murray. A two-time Pro Bowl running back with the Cowboys who led the NFL in rushing in 2014, Murray bolted to the Eagles as a free agent in 2015.

Cowboys fans flooded Twitter with bad thoughts aimed at Elliott’s Philly idea. And Murray’s name kept getting dragged into the conversation, causing him to trend on Twitter.

“If Zeke signs with Philly I’ll burn my jersey,” tweeted one fan. “I felt the same way with DeMarco Murray. It’s treachery of the highest order.”

In case you’re wondering, Murray currently serves as the running backs coach for the Oklahoma Sooners.
