The NFL suspended Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott for six games last week in response to allegations of violence and threats against a woman in Columbus, Ohio. Elliott is reportedly ready to take the NFL to court over the suspension, and his father says the legal team is digging in.

A message posted by Stacy Elliott (Ezekiel Elliott’s father) on Twitter said just as much and was accompanied by a screen shot of a report from The Star-Telegram, which included snippets of information regarding a review of legal documents used in the case against the Cowboys’ star running back.

The claim that will be argued by the Elliott legal team will attempt to suggest Elliott’s ex-girlfriend Tiffany Thompson, connected to Elliott in this legal issue, had threatened to ruin his career prior to the alleged assaults by the running back.

Whether or not Elliott attacked Thompson to any degree, or if Elliott has been set up, will remain an issue for the courts to sort out. No matter how it plays out in the legal system, however, does not shine any bright lights on a situation the NFL can simply not take lightly. The NFL has been faced with harsh criticism over how it handles athletes that have been connected to various forms of violence against women. It will be Elliott’s legal team’s mission to prove the NFL acted quickly without doing the due diligence, but upholding that will be difficult, considering how the NFL’s own policies do not have to rely simply on legal evidence.
