The New York Giants-Buffalo Bills game on Sunday Night Football this week is going to come with an unusual starting quarterback. New York backup Tyrod Taylor will be getting the start against his former team, with Giants’ head coach Brian Daboll officially ruling out regular starter Daniel Jones (battling a neck injury) Friday. This came after Jones didn’t practice Wednesday or Thursday:

The 34-year-old Taylor has been in the NFL since 2011, playing for the Baltimore Ravens, the Bills, the Cleveland Browns, the Houston Texans, and the Giants. He played for the Bills from 2015-17. He joined the Giants last year and appeared in three games, but only attempted eight passes (completing six). This season, he’s appeared in four games, completing 11 of 15 passes for 92 yards.

The 26-year-old Jones was drafted in the first round (sixth overall) by the Giants in 2019 following his career at Duke. He started 12, 14, 11, and 16 games for them over his first four seasons, and had started all five games for them thus far this season. But they’re just 1-4 on the season, and he has completed just 104 of 151 pass attempts (68.9 percent) for 884 yards with two touchdowns and six interceptions.

Meanwhile, the Bills are 3-2 on the season. They’re facing several figures who used to work for them in the Giants’ organization, including Daboll (their offensive coordinator from 2018-2021) and general manager Joe Schoen (their assistant general manager from 2017-2021). And now they’re going up against a former quarterback in Taylor. But they certainly seem to be in the stronger position right now, and that’s even more true with Jones and several other key Giants out.

We’ll see how Taylor’s first start for the Giants goes.
