The New York Giants are putting their faith in Daniel Jones to be their starting quarterback, despite a neck injury that cost him three games.

However, they’re also making sure they have some options.

Tommy DeVito was officially called up from the practice squad to the active roster on Tuesday, making him the backup quarterback behind Jones on Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders.

DeVito stepped in for an injured Tyrod Taylor in the Giants’ 13-10 loss to the New York Jets in Week 8. While he ran for his first career NFL touchdown, the Syracuse product and New Jersey native was just 2-0f-7 passing, and the Giants totaled negative nine yards in net passing as a team.

If Jones and DeVito were both unable to play for some reason, the Giants would likely turn to wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson or Saquon Barkley in an emergency situation. In Sunday’s loss, Barkley recorded 128 rushing yards on 36 carries and averaged 3.6 yards per carry.

DeVito appeared in three games during the preseason this year, going 43-of-64 (67.2 percent) for 453 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. His passing yardage ranks No. 6 out of all quarterbacks during preseason games.

The Giants are hoping that Jones, who was only cleared for contact this week, and DeVito if needed, are enough to help them turn things around. Relatively speaking the Giants should be 4-4, but uncertainty at the quarterback position and lack of stability on the offensive line has led to them holding the league’s fourth-worst record.
