The Jaylon Smith era in Green Bay did not last very long at all.
Smith had signed a five-year, $64 million contract extension with the Dallas Cowboys in 2019 that would have kept him with the NFL team until 2024. However, the Cowboys released Smith in early October after failing to find a trade partner for him.
A day later, the Packers signed Smith on the assumption he’d be able to bring some much-needed veteran leadership to their linebacking corps. What they might not have been counting on was how well De’Vondre Campbell stepped in to fill that role in the interim. And so, ESPN insider Adam Schefter announced on Tuesday that Green Bay officially released Smith less than a month after signing him.

It’s not a huge surprise given that Smith did not play a single snap in last Thursday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals, which the Packers won. In fact, Smith only played on 27 snaps for the Packers, recording one tackle.
We’ll wait to see if anyone else decides to sign the former Pro Bowl linebacker in order to shore up their defense.
