On Monday, the NFL world was discussing some shocking comments about Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson from an anonymous defensive coordinator, and a lot of people seemed to think they’d figured out it was Washington Commander’s DC Jack Del Rio.

The Athletic published a piece on Monday, asking several anonymous coaches and coordinators to rate several NFL quarterbacks. While there were lots of interesting tidbits, one scathing rundown in particular about Jackson caught people’s attention.

“If he has to pass to win the game, they ain’t winning the game,” the anonymous coordinator told The Athletic. “He’s so unique as an athlete and he’s really a good football player, but I don’t (care) if he wins the league MVP 12 times, I don’t think he’ll ever be a 1 as a quarterback. He’ll be a 1 as a football player, but not as a quarterback. So many games come down to two-minute, and that is why they have a hard time advancing even when they are good on defense. Playoffs are tight. You have to be able to throw the ball, and he is just so inconsistent throwing the ball. It is hit or miss.”

While we don’t know the identity of the DC, many people quickly jumped to the conclusion that it was Del Rio, perhaps given the way this opinion of a Black quarterback might line up with some of his previously stated views on other things.

However, others were quick to point out that if the criteria here is that the defensive coordinator has an issue with a Black quarterback, there are probably plenty of other coordinators in the NFL who have that kind of view.

We almost certainly will never find out who this anonymous coordinator was for sure, but Del Rio’s reputation certainly precedes him here, whether it’s actually him or not.
