Jared Goff Syndication: Detroit Free Press

The Detroit Lions finished the 2022 NFL season as one of the hottest teams in the entire NFL and are widely predicted to build upon that success at the end of last season with many predicting them to contend for the NFC North title. But oddly enough, it doesn’t sound like Detroit Lions starting quarterback Jared Goff is necessarily buying the hype around his own team.

During a recent interview, Jared Goff downplayed the “hype train” that the team was facing this offseason, pointing out that the team didn’t even make the playoffs last year and that they “haven’t done anything” to earn all the preseason praise.

“That so-called ‘hype train,’ I think it’s funny to me that like you go 9-8, you don’t make the playoffs and now you’re all of a sudden the favorite. Of course, we’ve got good players, we’ve got good coaches, we’ve got a good team, but we haven’t done anything,” Goff said according to Eric Woodyard of ESPN.

They’re certainly fair comments from Goff and he certainly didn’t say anything that was necessarily incorrect. Still, it’s a little odd to hear a starting quarterback downplay hype and expectations for his own team heading into the season.
