The Detroit Lions acquired quarterback Jared Goff in a blockbuster trade two years ago. Detroit brought the former Cal signal-caller in as they sent longtime QB Matthew Stafford to Los Angeles. While Stafford and the Rams won a Super Bowl, Detroit hasn’t paid dividends like that quite yet. But that doesn’t mean the Lions are deterred from Goff.

The Lions suggested the opposite this week. General manager Brad Holmes told the media that the team and Goff have had “positive” dialogue on his next contract.

“Brad Holmes said dialogue between the team and agents for Jared Goff and Jonah Jackson continues and has been positive. That’s about as much as you’ll get out of the GM on contract talks,” reporter Justin Rogers posted on Friday morning.

It seems clear that Detroit is more than content with its quarterback situation. While Goff isn’t Stafford, and while he has his deficiencies, he’s played strongly enough to remain a competent QB. Only six Lions quarterbacks in history have thrown for 3,000 yards or more: Stafford, Joey Harrington, Gary Danielson, Scott Mitchell, Jon Kitna, and Jared Goff, who’s done it twice. He threw for 4,438 yards in 2022, the fifth-highest single-season total in Lions franchise history.

So Goff and Detroit are a relationship that makes sense for both parties right now. You would figure a new contract for the former No. 1 overall pick is on its way.
