The Seattle Seahawks outperformed expectations last season and made their way to the playoffs, going 9-8 in their first year after the Russell Wilson trade.
Seattle’s road back to the playoffs may have gotten a bit tougher on Tuesday, as ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba injured his wrist in Saturday night’s win against the Cowboys, and will be having surgery in Philadelphia.
Seahawks’ first-round pick Jaxon Smith-Njigba is undergoing wrist surgery today in Philadelphia, but still could have a chance to be ready for the start of the regular season, per sources. Surgery will determine how long he will miss. He hurt his wrist Saturday night vs. Dallas.

The first-rounder out of Ohio State had a strong showing in the game against Dallas, hauling in three receptions for 58 yards, one of which was a 48-yard completion where he was tackled on the one-yard line. That play is when the injury occurred, per Schefter.
Seahawks’ first-round pick Jaxon Smith-Njigba broke a bone in his wrist on the play in which he almost scored Saturday night. He will have it surgically repaired today in Philadelphia. https://t.co/C7oTkoBv94

Following a promising 2021 where Smith-Njigba had 95 receptions for 1,606 yards and set the Rose Bowl single-game receiving record with 347 yards in Ohio State’s win over Utah, the wide receiver strained his hamstring on Ohio State’s 2022 season opener against Notre Dame and played in just three games before deciding to sit out the rest of the season to heal up and focus on the NFL Draft.
There currently is no timetable for how long Smith-Njigba will be out, or if the injury will cost him any time in the regular season. An update will be provided after the surgery.
The shocking news led to plenty of reactions on social media.

Huge news on Jaxon Smith-Njigba
Unlikely to be a ligament repair given the timeline to return.
Educated guess: fracture/pin for one of the small bones in the wrist, which would allow him to return sooner than later. Assume production dip for first quarter of the season. https://t.co/w47WRzPGgK— Jeff Mueller, PT, DPT (@jmthrivept) August 22, 2023
