Jim Harbaugh’s return to the NFL with the Los Angeles Chargers led to a number of Michigan assistant coaches following Harbaugh to the NFL level. But when it comes to his new offensive coordinator, Harbaugh opted to hire one of his brother’s former assistants for the role.

Former Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman served under John Harbaugh from 2019-2022, ultimately being relieved of his duties for the 2023-24 season and without a job in the NFL.

That will be changing for the 2024-25 season, as Roman was officially announced as the new offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers on Tuesday.

Most remember Roman for his time with the Ravens under John Harbaugh. But this move makes sense given the fact that Roman actually goes further back with Jim than he does John.

Roman was the offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers while Jim Harbaugh was the head coach from 2011-2014, notably helping the team reach the Super Bowl in 2012.

The Chargers’ offense had an extremely down year this season, finishing with just the 18th-best offense in total yards per game.

Roman has a pretty lengthy track record as an offensive coordinator in the NFL over the years, helping a number of successful teams make some deep postseason runs.

He will have an excellent quarterback in Justin Herbert to work with to help turn around their struggling offense. With Roman’s help, the Chargers offense could look like an entirely different unit next season.
