The NFL world was pretty shocked on Monday with the news that, after months of trying to find a trade for him, the San Francisco 49ers have agreed to a restructured deal with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo for the upcoming NFL season.

Jimmy G’s revised contract that will make him the highest-paid backup quarterback in the NFL while they hope that the Trey Lance era begins without needing his predecessor to step in. Garoppolo’s base salary drops to $6.5 million this season while he will have potential incentives that could get him to $10 million if he ends up playing and/or starting again.

The deal also includes no-trade and no-tag clauses, which means Garoppolo is likely to remain in San Francisco this season before leaving in 2023 unless a trade opportunity that both parties agreed to happens first.

It’s quite the ending, for now, for a saga that always seemed destined for Jimmy G to be in a new uniform in 2022. It’s all but certain that he will not be with San Francisco this time next season, at least. The only question now is if he ends up reclaiming his starting spot at some point because Lance doesn’t live up to expectations.

The surprising contract move garnered some very sreong reactions from around the NFL world, from those wondering why Garoppolo would agree to it, what it means about Lance, and others wondering if it means he’ll still be traded at some point.
