When a team is trailing in the fourth quarter of an NFL game, it’s never a great sign for the team’s chances of winning. But over the years, it has meant almost certain defeat for San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, according to one particularly brutal stat.

As one San Francisco 49ers fan account pointed out, with the Niners falling to the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday afternoon, head coach Kyle Shanahan has still never won a game when trailing by eight or more points in the fourth quarter and has won just one game when trailing by three or more points in the fourth quarter.

“#49ers HC Kyle Shanahan is now: 0-37 when trailing by 8+ points in the 4th Quarter. 1-31 when trailing by 3+ points entering the 4th Q,” the account wrote on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.

Obviously, teams are more likely to lose games when they’re trailing in the fourth quarter, but to have only won one game when trailing by three or more in the fourth quarter is certainly a pretty brutal stat, and the NFL world had a lot to say about it on social media.

So if the Niners are trailing in the fourth quarter, don’t expect a comeback victory.
