When Mac Jones was a rookie, it’s safe to say that most saw him as at least a somewhat suitable replacement for the departed Tom Brady after he led the team to the playoffs in just his rookie season. But after a rocky second year where the offense never really thrived consistently, people began to question Jones. But one of his former teammates thinks that scrutiny needs to stop.

Longtime New England Patriots safety Devin McCourty retired from the league a few weeks ago, and this week he did a very candid interview with WEEI radio. As part of that interview, McCourty came to the defense of Mac Jones.

“I don’t think he should be subjected to as much displeasure and scrutiny as he gets. We sat here his rookie year and said, ‘Hey, I’m with this! I like this new era.’ We go to the playoffs and it’s like ‘Here we go!’ Then what happened this year from an offensive situation coaching-staff-wise … He needs to have some consistency [around him],” McCourty said on the radio appearance according to ESPN.

We’ll have to see how Jones performs in his third season with the Patriots after the team makes much-needed changes to its offensive coaching staff.
