Bears head coach Matt Nagy has had plenty of issues on the field this year in Chicago, but today he dropped news that transcends the many issues facing the offense he oversees.

During his Monday presser, Nagy announced that he’s tested positive for Covid-19, and will be out until he returns two negative tests within a 48-hour span.

The Bears are currently 3-4, having been destroyed 38-3 by Tom Brady and the Bucs in a national window on Sunday afternoon. But maybe more concerning is the Covid outbreak the team is dealing with, which has seen multiple key starters (and Jimmy Graham) sidelined in recent weeks.

Via Adam Hoge in NBC Sports Chicago:

The Bears are having a COVID outbreak over the past week. Linebacker Caleb Johnson and offensive lineman Elijah Wilkinson were added to the reserve/COVID-19 list Sunday morning before kickoff.

Outside linebacker Robert Quinn and tight end Jimmy Graham didn’t play on Sunday because they were put on the reserve/COVID-19 list last week.

Damien Williams was removed from the list on Saturday after the minimum 10-day absence for positive tests of unvaccinated players. And further back, wide receivers coach Mike Furrey missed the Packers game because of a positive test.

That NBC piece notes that Nagy is vaccinated, which likely helps to explain the absence of symptoms so far. Hopefully that stays the case, obviously; plenty of Bears fans would gladly enjoy seeing Nagy out of the job, but this is certainly not the way anyone wanted it to happen.

Nagy revealed special teams coordinator Chris Tabor would take over meetings Nagy would normally run, and presumably he’d be in line to take over head coaching duties on Sunday against the 49ers if Nagy can’t return by then.
