Though the New York Jets managed to defeat Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football, their Super Bowl ambitions suffered a major blow when new franchise quarterback Aaron Rodgers ruptured his Achilles tendon four snaps into the season with his new team.

The Jets and Rodgers agree that he won’t return this season. However, many NFL observers expect Rodgers to retire given his age (39) and the nature of an Achilles tendon injury.

But Jets offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, who coached the same role above Rodgers with the Green Bay Packers, said Thursday that he expects Rodgers to play next season.

“I don’t think there are words to describe it … I just feel horrible for him,” Hackett said Thursday.

Rodgers said on social media that he will “rise again” and Hackett believes his longtime quarterback.

“Oh yeah,” Hackett said. “Whenever Aaron’s got his mind set on something, good luck for anybody that wants to change his mind.”

Hackett also denied charges that he wants to mold Jets’ backup quarterback Zach Wilson, who earned a field promotion into the starting role, from a gunslinger to a game manager.

“I want every quarterback to be a quarterback,” Hackett said. How that works for the Jets remains to be seen.

The NFL world was quick to react to the news, with Jets fans believing Rodgers will return while other fans remaining doubtful:
