The San Francisco 49ers had been working tirelessly to get Nick Bosa’s extension done. They did just that on Wednesday when the defensive back reportedly signed a five-year, $170 million contract.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter, sighting sources, said the details include $122.5 million guaranteed and will make him the highest-paid defensive player in history.

Bosa, the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the year, had been in talks about his future with the team for a while, and managed to be four million dollars per year apart according to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, but head coach Kyle Shanahan said time and time again he wasn’t worried a deal would get done.

“I thought it would come probably at this time just looking at the history of those things,” Shanahan said last month, according to NFL.com. “I’m really hoping it gets done. I know they’re working tirelessly at it. [General manager] John [Lynch], [VP of football administrations Brian] Hamp [Hampton], [president] Paraag [Marathe]. I know their team is. But hopefully we can get him in here sooner than later.”

Bosa finished his fourth season in 2022 with a league-leading 18.5 sacks, starting in all 16 regular-season games. He also was in MVP talks, earning his third Pro-Bowl selection.

The 25-year-old was drafted in the first round (second overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft where he arguably was the best player in the class. He put up a clinic at Ohio State in three seasons. Bosa’s athleticism and pass-rush moves immediately made him stand out, and the money is certainly being put where its mouth is.

The 49ers will have one of the best blockers in the game on their team for years to come.
