Chiefs Patrick Mahomes Jay Biggerstaff-USA TODAY Sports

Late in Sunday night’s game between the Green Bay Packers and the Kansas City Chiefs, Packers defensive back Carrington Valentine appeared to interfere with Chiefs wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling on a deep ball at the 10-yard line, but no flag was thrown. And Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes doesn’t sound too upset about it.

During his postgame press conference, Patrick Mahomes had a pretty surprising response to the decision that didn’t quite go his team’s way, acknowledging that referees have “a hard job” and indicating that he’d actually prefer referees to be slow to throw flags in that situation, saying “I can’t be wanting a flag.”

“It is what it is, man. Obviously the guy was probably a little early, but at the end of the game they’re letting guys play,” Mahomes said at his postgame press conference. “I’m kind of about that. I’d rather you let the guys play and let the guys win it on the field. It’s a hard job, man. When we’re in that situation, I can’t be wanting a flag. I have to try to go out there and win the game myself and with the rest of my teammates.”

Obviously, the Chiefs were unable to score a game-tying touchdown after that point, and it sounds like Mahomes thinks they should have executed better.
