Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, wide receiver Percy Harvin has informed the Buffalo Bills that he will retire before the 2016 NHL season.
Harvin is 27 and has played seven seasons in the league, spending four years with the Minnesota Vikings before jumping between the Seattle Seahawks, New York Jets, and Buffalo Bills in the last three years.
Harvin had signed a three-year deal with Buffalo last year but ongoing hip problems may have finalled sealed the deal on his pro football career.
The 2009 AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year also went to the Pro Bowl that season. After putting up career-highs in 2011 with 87 catches and and 967 receiving yards, he’s seen his production drop off precipitously. Harvin was traded to the Seahawks in 2013 but injuries derailed his season, though he did return to score a touchdown in Seattle’s Super Bowl victory over the Broncos.
Purported locker room confrontations with teammates caused the Seahawks to trade Harvin to the Jets during the 2014 season, where he finished out the year before getting cut in the offseason. His 2015 season with the Bills was fairly forgettable.
Harvin is perhaps best remembered for his college career, where he was a two-time BCS National Champion with the Florida Gators. In three seasons he caught 133 passes for 1,929 yards and 13 touchdowns while also rushing 194 times for 1,852 yards and 19 touchdowns.
