Last season, Pittsburgh Steelers veteran quarterback Mitchell Trubisky began the season as the team’s starting quarterback before he was eventually benched and replaced as the starter by rookie Kenny Pickett. With Pickett now the team’s starter, the Steelers are left with a dilemma of whether or not to bring back Trubisky next year.

According to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Steelers would like for Mitchell Trubisky to return to the team next season, but the team might not be willing to pay what it takes to keep him on the roster.

“The Steelers have to decide if they want to pay a backup quarterback $8 million in salary (not counting incentives) and have him count $10.625 million against the salary cap in 2023. That would make Trubisky, 28, among the highest-paid backups in the league, if not the highest,” Gulac wrote for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Trubisky may have been demoted to second string last year, but the team needed him to fill in as the starter several times when Pickett was unable to play due to injury. In those three games, Pickett completed 75 percent of his pass attempts for 599 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions with a passer rating of 94.46. The Steelers will just have to decide whether or not it’s worth it to have such a capable backup on the bench.
