The Las Vegas Raiders have been rumored to potentially be in the market for a quarterback this offseason, whether that be in free agency or potentially in the 2024 NFL Draft. And that rumor may be gaining even more traction after releasing a veteran quarterback on Friday.

Las Vegas is already expected to part ways with Jimmy Garoppolo this offseason in a move that will shed over $11 million in cap space. This report also notably came after Garoppolo violated the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug policy last month.

And now on Friday, the team cut ties with Brian Hoyer after only one year with the organization, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Hoyer has certainly seen his fair share of destinations over the course of his NFL career, playing for eight different teams across his 15 NFL seasons.

Last season, he started in one game for the Raiders before the team ultimately decided on rookie quarterback Aiden O’Connell being the starter for the end of the season.

This decision is particularly interesting because it now means that if they do indeed release Garoppolo this offseason as they are projected to, then O’Connell will be the only quarterback on their roster.

Chances are they will likely bring in another veteran to take Hoyer’s place behind O’Connell. But it also indicates that they very well could be bringing in another option to potentially challenge O’Connell for the starting spot.

O’Connell showed flashes throughout his rookie season last year. But it certainly seems like the Raiders could be well-suited to look for a true quarterback of the future this offseason if they can find one.
