The football world was struck with some terrible news on Thursday regarding former Miami Hurricanes Ray Lewis III, the son of NFL Hall of Famer Ray Lewis.

Lewis III has reportedly passed away on Thursday at just 28 years of age. TMZ Sports confirmed the news on Thursday, though at this point there are no details on the cause of death.

The former high school football standout did not see much action at Miami, which prompted him to transfer to Coastal Carolina. He then played in all 12 games for Coastal Carolina in 2015.

He then ran into trouble with the law, which led to him being suspended from the team and opting to play at the Division II level at Virginia Union.

His former coach at Virginia Union, Diego Ryland issued a statement to TMZ on his unfortunate passing.

“Great young man and a better teammate,” said Ryland. “The entire Virginia Union University community is praying for the family as they deal with the loss of Ray.”

Many football fans also took to social media to offer their condolences to Ray Lewis and his family during this difficult time.

Lewis’ younger brother, Rahsaan also took to social media, confirming the news in a heartbreaking message to his brother.
