The Broncos defense performed historically well all season, particularly in the playoffs, and now it’s time for the Broncos to pay them in kind. Rumors have the Broncos applying the franchise tag to Von Miller, but players like Danny Trevathan and Malik Jackson are also becoming free agents this offseason.

Mike Klis of 9News in Denver reports that the team is “negotiating in earnest” with Jackson on a new contract that would keep him a Bronco long term, although he notes not enough progress has been made to keep him from testing free agency as of yet.

Jackson was a key cog in the Broncos defensive line that generated constant pressure on Cam Newton during Super Bowl 50, and the Broncos obviously want to do everything in their power to keep him on board next season.

In other news, Klis also believes that the Broncos will use the franchise tag on Von Miller, which would bring him in at a cap hit of about $14 million before attempting to negotiate a long term deal with the Super Bowl MVP.

And with regards to their QB situation, the Broncos want to talk extension with Brock Osweiler, but cannot do anything concrete until Peyton Manning gives the team his plans for next season. His salary of $19 million would become fully guaranteed after March 9 in the last year of his five year contract.
