Sometimes, it’s better to get out while you’re ahead—case in point, Super Bowl champion and potential future Hall of Famer Richard Sherman.

Sherman, the cornerback-turned-analyst for Amazon’s Thursday Night Football production, spoke about a realization that came over him. After spending his entire career with the Seattle Seahawks, Sherman played in San Francisco from 2018-2020 and Tampa Bay in 2021. He had a short-lived run with the Bucs, as he played in just five games and started three.

Sherman recently entertained Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman Lane Johnson. In particular, the former five-time Pro Bowler’s attempt to cover Eagle wide receiver DeVonta Smith. According to NFL.com, Sherman said that he had a brutally honest realization come over him while he was in Tampa: He felt he could no longer keep up.

Via NFL.com, the former five-time All-Pro said, “Our coach was looking at me on the sidelines, like, ‘You want to come out? You want to come out?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, but they’re in a hurry-up.’ So, I’m like bailing out. At that moment, I was like, ‘Yeah, this is probably my last year. I don’t got it for these young dudes right now.'”

In some ways, it’s humbling to come across that realization. Everyone eventually faces it in some way or another. In terms of reaction, Richard Sherman handled it pretty well.
