On Tuesday, Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera had some eyebrow-raising comments about new offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, saying that players “struggle with certain things” under Bieniemy and claiming that he was “a little concerned” with Bieniemy’s level of intensity compared to coordinator defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio, who he pointed out was more experienced. And he’s walking back some of those comments on Wednesday.

During his press conference on Wednesday, Ron Rivera opened with a prepared statement in an attempt to admit it was a mistake to make those comments and clarify his words from the previous day. He also made it clear that he spoke to Bieniemy after his comments yesterday.

“I basically told him I put my foot in my mouth,” Rivera said according to Pro Football Talk. “I think what I said wasn’t as clear as it needed to be. I think the understanding of it is just the fact that I think everybody’s making, in my opinion, a little bit more than needs to be made of this. The results are what you look for on the field; the last couple days have been outstanding.”

We’ll have to see how their relationship continues in the future and how Bieniemy’s first season leading the Commanders’ offense goes.
