Ron Rivera Commanders Sergio Estrada-USA TODAY Sports

It’s no secret to those who watch the NFL that Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera is facing an important season that could determine his future as the team’s head coach. And it sounds like he’s even aware that he’s on the hot seat.

As he prepares for the upcoming 2023 NFL season, Ron Rivera seems to understand that he’s very much on the hot seat given the team’s performance since he’s been the head coach. But even though this is a make-or-break season for him, Rivera is determined not to be desperate.

“I could be gone in a year, that’s football,” Rivera recently told The Washington Times. “I understand that. But what I want to do is when I leave, I want everybody to go and say, ‘Boy the roster’s in a good place.’ … That’s great. I want to walk away saying that’s what I did. I’m good with it. I understand it.

“I’m not going to be desperate. I’m not. Because when you’re desperate, you make bad decisions.”

Rivera has a 22-27-1 record in three years in Washington, never finishing above .500 in any of those seasons. It’s safe to say that he’ll need to perform better this season if he wants to remain the team’s head coach.
