The Washington Commanders selected former North Carolina Tar Heels quarterback Sam Howell in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft and he spent most of the season as their third-string quarterback behind veteran quarterbacks Carson Wentz and Taylor Heinicke. But it looks like he’ll be the team’s starting quarterback going forward.

According to NFL insider Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports, the Washington Commanders are preparing to make Sam Howell their starting quarterback during the 2023 season.

“Sam Howell, who started and won the 17th game of the season for Washington, is expected to be QB1 when the Commanders begin offseason work in the new league year. That would seemingly take the Commanders both out of the running for a veteran in the trade market and using their No. 16 overall pick in the 2023 draft on a rookie,” Jones wrote on CBS.com.

Howell started the team’s final game of the season and had a strong performance with some high-quality throws. He finished the game going 11-for-19 through the air for 169 yards with one touchdown and one interception, leading the team to a 26-6 win over the Dallas Cowboys.

He may not have been given too many chances in his rookie year, but it looks like the team is ready to let him lead the team next season.
