The Denver Broncos thought they made a major move when they hired former Super Bowl champion Sean Payton.

Payton went as far as this offseason to call last season’s performance by his predecessor Nathaniel Hackett “one of the worst” coaching performances in league history.

The Broncos, however, are sitting at 0-3 after Sunday’s historic loss to the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins exploded for 726 offensive yards en route to a 70-20 win. It was the NFL’s first 70-point game since 1966 and the first 50-point win since 2014.

“I’m at a loss for words,” Payton said after the game, according to Nick Kosmider of The Athletic. “Every once in a while in the NFL you get your butt kicked, but this was different.”

Payton made the curious decision to leave quarterback Russell Wilson and the entire offensive line in throughout the game even though the outcome was almost never in doubt in the second half.

That decision didn’t sit well with Dolphins star cornerback Xavien Howard.

“That was totally disrespectful,” Howard said, according to Jim Sheridan of The Sun. “That man did a lot for this game. They’ve got to do better on that side. You can’t be leaving guys like that out there.”

The Broncos will get their next crack at their first win of the season on Sunday when they travel to Illinois to face the Chicago Bears.
