Whether he meant to or not, Tampa Bay Buccaneers‘ edge rusher Shaq Barrett provided the Kansas City Chiefs with some material bulletin-board material last week when he suggested that his team’s defense could dominate the game. After giving up 41 points in a loss, Barrett now has to own up to his statements a little bit, and it sure sounds like he regrets opening his mouth.

Meeting with reporters on Wednesday, Barrett admitted that he was surprised by how poorly his team played defensively and acknowledged that it certainly hurts his team’s reputation.

“I would have never guessed we’d give up 41 points at any point this year,” Barrett said according to Tampa Bay Buccaneers reporter Greg Auman. “That hurts as a defense. As a team, we pride ourselves on good defense and wanting to be one of the best units in the league. Giving up 41 points diminishes that argument.”

Barrett also addressed his words from last week, saying that while he didn’t mean to take any shots or provide any trash talk, he understands that his delivery “gave it a bad little vibe.”

“I wasn’t trying to send any shots at anybody or anything like that. They came out and did what they were supposed to do to get the win,” Barrett said according to Auman. “The way I laughed a little bit gave it a bad little vibe.”

The Bucs will try to get back on track this week against the Atlanta Falcons.
