The Steelers already have their quarterback of the future on the roster in Kenny Pickett, and his backup in Mitchell Trubisky. Still, that didn’t prevent Pittsburgh from taking a flier on an intriguing quarterback prospect after completing the 2023 NFL Draft. On Saturday, the Steelers agreed to terms with former Minnesota Golden Gophers QB Tanner Morgan on an undrafted free-agent deal.

Pittsburgh needed an arm as it had just two quarterbacks on its roster. Rather than drafting one, the Steelers took a chance on Morgan, who had an illustrious career at the University of Minnesota. The Steelers allocated their draft capital elsewhere and didn’t make Morgan the 15th quarterback to be selected in this year’s draft. And yet, he may have an inside track at being a camp arm for the Steelers, who may stick around on the practice squad throughout the season.

The 24-year-old Morgan redshirted his freshman season at Minnesota in 2017 and then made 45 starts over five years. Morgan led Minnesota to a 31-14 record during his collegiate career, including an impressive 2019 season in which he was named Second-Team All-Big Ten. In 48 career games, Morgan completed 62 percent of his passes for 9,236 yards with 63 touchdowns and 32 interceptions.

While he doesn’t figure to play much of a role to the Steelers, he does bring a unique playmaking ability at the quarterback position.
